The Collaborators: Travis Scott, Pharrell, Virgil Abloh, Yohji Yamamoto and the Sneakers They Made

Behind every sneaker that sells out in seconds there is a name. A rapper, a designer, a boutique owner, a jeweler. Collaborations are where sportswear brands hand the keys to an outsider — and the results have become the most wanted shoes on the planet. Here is a guide to the collaborators who have reshaped Jordan, Nike, adidas and Salomon, with the flagship models each one released. Every pair pictured is available right now at Tempo Kicks.

Travis Scott — Cactus Jack x Jordan

Travis Scott x Air Jordan 1 Retro High OG Cactus Jack

The Houston rapper turned a single design gesture — the reversed, backwards Swoosh — into the most recognizable signature in modern sneaker culture. Since 2017, every Cactus Jack drop has been an event, and Travis Scott has become Jordan Brand's most powerful partner outside of Michael Jordan himself.

Flagship releases: the Air Jordan 1 Retro High OG "Cactus Jack" in mocha suede with its hidden stash pocket, the Air Jordan 6 "Cactus Jack" Olive with a glow-in-the-dark sole and a working lateral pocket, the Travis Scott x Fragment x Air Jordan 1 Low three-way, and the women's Air Jordan 1 Low "Canary".

Pharrell Williams — Humanrace x adidas

Adidas Adistar Jellyfish Pharrell White

Producer, singer, creative director of Louis Vuitton menswear — and one of the longest-running adidas collaborators. Pharrell's Humanrace label started with the NMD Hu and has grown into a full design language: organic shapes, earthy palettes and a focus on movement.

Flagship releases: the sculptural adidas Adistar Jellyfish, an archive 2000s runner reborn with a translucent, jellyfish-like sole — available in White, Triple Black, Crystal Sand, Royal Blue, Real Green, Focus Olive Orange, Solid Grey and Dark Brown Frozen Green — plus the performance-ready Humanrace x Adizero EVO SL.

Virgil Abloh — Off-White x Nike

Off-White x Air Jordan 1 Retro High Chicago

In 2017 the late Virgil Abloh deconstructed ten Nike icons and changed sneaker design forever. Exposed foam, visible stitching, zip ties and Helvetica quotation marks became a vocabulary that the whole industry has borrowed since. Abloh went on to become artistic director of Louis Vuitton menswear; "The Ten" remains his most influential footwear work.

Flagship releases: the Air Jordan 1 "Chicago" — the crown jewel of The Ten — alongside the AJ1 "UNC" and AJ1 White, the Air Presto, Blazer Mid, VaporMax, Air Max 90, Air Max 97, Zoom Fly, Air Force 1 Volt and Dunk Low University Red. See the full line in our Off-White collection.

Yohji Yamamoto — Y-3 x adidas

Adidas Y-3 Adizero Adios Pro 4 Utility Black Off White

The original sportswear-meets-fashion partnership. Since 2002 the Japanese couturier has run Y-3 as a permanent adidas line, translating his avant-garde, black-heavy tailoring into sneakers and running gear. Where most collabs are a one-off, Y-3 is a design house of its own.

Flagship releases: the Y-3 Adizero Adios Pro 4 Utility Black / Off White and Off White / Black — adidas's marathon-winning carbon racer wrapped in oversized diagonal stripes and the Yamamoto signature. Browse the Adidas Y-3 collection.

Hiroshi Fujiwara — Fragment Design

Fragment Design x Nike Mind 001

The godfather of Japanese streetwear. Fujiwara's Fragment Design is famous for doing less: a double lightning bolt, a restrained palette, and a premium feel that turned the 2014 Air Jordan 1 "Fragment" into a grail. He is also the connective tissue of the scene — hence the three-way with Travis Scott.

Flagship releases: the Fragment Design x Nike Mind 001 slide and the Travis Scott x Fragment x Air Jordan 1 Low.

Rei Kawakubo — Comme des Garçons

Comme des Garçons Homme Plus x Air Jordan 11 Retro White

The most uncompromising designer in fashion took on the most beloved Jordan silhouette. Comme des Garçons Homme Plus stripped the Air Jordan 11 of its patent leather shine and rebuilt it in matte, monochrome tones — a runway shoe that still reads as a Jordan.

Flagship releases: the Comme des Garçons x Air Jordan 11 White and Black — see our Jordan collection.

Chris Gibbs — Union Los Angeles

Union LA x Air Jordan 4 Retro SP Guava Ice

Union LA is one of the world's most respected sneaker boutiques, and owner Chris Gibbs designs like a collector: folded-down tongues, vintage-inspired materials and colors that feel found rather than made. His Jordan 4s are among the most coveted of the past decade.

Flagship release: the Union LA x Air Jordan 4 "Guava Ice".

James Whitner — A Ma Maniére

A Ma Maniére x Air Jordan 4 Retro SP Dark Mocha

From his Atlanta boutique, James Whitner has built the most luxurious Jordan collaborations on the market: quilted satin linings, burgundy and mocha tones, premium suede. A Ma Maniére turns retros into objects you would find in a high-fashion showroom.

Flagship release: the A Ma Maniére x Air Jordan 4 "Dark Mocha".

Tiffany & Co. — the jeweler's Air Force 1

Tiffany & Co. x Nike Air Force 1 Low 1837

When a 180-year-old New York jeweler meets the most iconic Nike silhouette, you get black suede, a Tiffany Blue Swoosh and sterling silver hardware. Released in 2023, the "1837" is the definition of a luxury sneaker.

Flagship release: the Tiffany & Co. x Nike Air Force 1 Low "1837".

Nike SB — skate culture meets Jordan

Nike SB x Air Jordan 4 Retro SP Pine Green

Not a person but a crew: Nike's skateboarding division reworked the Air Jordan 4 with a padded sockliner, reinforced suede and a skate-ready outsole. Proof that a collab can be about function as much as fashion.

Flagship release: the Nike SB x Air Jordan 4 "Pine Green".

END. and Children of the Discordance — Salomon XT-6

Children of the Discordance x Salomon XT-6

Salomon's trail icon has become a favorite canvas for fashion. British retailer END. gave it a GORE-TEX shell in asphalt and emerald, while Japanese label Children of the Discordance, led by Hideaki Shikama, covered it in patchwork prints.

Flagship releases: the Salomon XT-6 GORE-TEX END. Asphalt Emerald and the Children of the Discordance x Salomon XT-6.
